Holding a General Class Amateur Radio license, Jonathan joined ARES in March 2004 and participates in Field Day and local Emergency Power Events and enjoys Digital modes, DX and rag chewing on 2 and 80 meters. Jonathan will pursue his interest in power generation and electronics with a major in mechanical engineering at the University of Kentucky College of Engineering at Paducah.

Jonathan wrote back to us saying:

... I am writing this letter to express my sincerest thanks to [NCDXF] for your generosity in funding this award. I am very pleased to be [a] recipient of this award.

It is an honor to be recognized for my hard work and receiving this scholarship motivates me to continue to strive for excellence. I graduate from high school on May 28, 2006 and look forward to starting college this fall. I plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering. This scholarship enables me to concentrate more on schoolwork with less worry about funding my education. Subsequently, this scholarship will help me to realize my educational goals.

I first became developed an interest in amateur radio early in elementary school. By my Sophomore year in high school I knew I wanted to pursue that interest. Early in 2004, I actively began studying to pass my Technicians License and was successful on my first attempt on March 13,2004. In September 2004, I successfully completed the HF exam. In November 2004, I achieved General Class. I thoroughly enjoy my radio communications as a hobby. My participation in amateur radio has served to deepen my interest in electronics, engineering and communications.

Thank you once again for your contributions to the ARRL Foundation Scholarship Program.

Sincerely and 73,
Jonathan Jewell, KI4ETM
