MFJ-890 DX Beacon Monitor

MFJ Enterprises, Inc. has introduced a stand-alone hardware product which shows the currently transmitting beacon by illuminating an LED on a world map.

It would not be possible to create an easier to use beacon display. Simply connect 12 volts to the unit and wait for it to synchronize its clock with the WWVB Atomic Clock in Boulder, Colorado. Once the clock is synchronized, select the band to display and watch the LEDs light in the appropriate sequence.

If you are out of range of the clock signal, the unit can be synchronized manually by pressing the Manual Sync button at the start of the 20 meter sequence.

I am located on the fringe of the WWVB Signal Coverage Area. During the day, the unit did not receive a strong enough signal to lock in. But by the next morning, the green LED was happily showing an accurate clock synchronization and the LEDs were spot on with the beacon transmissions.

It is very convenient to just glance up at the unit and know which beacon is transmitting. Its very presence on my bookshelf reminds me to listen in from time to time.

Current pricing and specifications are on the MFJ-890 DX Beacon Monitor product page. You can also download the manual [pdf].

Now if only they would build in a receiver, too.
